The Hidden Secrets of Managing Your Career for Ultimate Success: Pillar I - Who are you?

The official launch date of my book has been set for February 13th, 2024. As I work on completing my Developmental Edit, I will be sharing with you some of the hidden secrets of managing your career for ultimate success.

So, the question is, “Who are You?”. In managing your career this is one of the most important concepts to master. Picture in your mind that you are building a building. This building is you. Your life is made up of different building blocks such as family, spirituality, physical fitness, and your career integrated together serving as the foundation.

By anchoring each corner with key life categories and carefully laying out 3-5 objectives for each, you can build a strong personal brand that is easily recognizable and consistent. Where you spend your time relates to the bricks you lay to build your personal brand. To build a strong brand that is easily recognizable it needs to be consistent. You are building your personal brand that is directly linked to you. The answer to Who are you? => It is your personal brand – it is what is said about you and what people believe about you when you are not in the room.

Most importantly, you are the architect of you. The building you are building requires a plan, it requires you as the architect and contractor to dedicate 5% - 10% of your time to planning your brand and your career. This plan is the careful integration of the Right Angle® methodology – being true to yourself and ensuring the ingredients of your brand on the outside label accurately reflect the contents inside.

One of the first things I work with new clients on is answering the following questions i) If your managers, your N+1s were asked to describe you as a professional in three words, what would they say? Perhaps, they may say you are earnest, selfless, and innovative, but what is the shared vision of who you are or said differently what are the perceptions of who you are? How consistent are the perceptions of you, i.e. your personal brand, are they highly concentrated or are they widely dispersed? ii) If the same exercise was conducted with your peers what would that look like and once again what would the results look like if conducted with your direct reports iii) Lastly, but most importantly what ideally would you want your brand, the three words they choose to describe you, what would you want people to say who you are when you are not in the room.
